By any standards, the British clothing industry is big - we buy around 2 million tonnes of clothing every year. But we rarely consider the waste it produces, which amounts to between 1.5 and 2 million tonnes every year. More than 60% is landfilled and much of the rest is sent for reuse abroad or sold in charity shops. (DEFRA, 2007)
The RECONSTYLE movement stands against this kind of disposable fashion. We say that this is not a 'waste'. This clothing represents fabric that someone doesn't have to make, cotton someone doesn't have to be grown, transport that doesn't have to happen. If we can use this material to produce something new, it is no longer a 'waste' but a resource, a good thing, a mountain of fashion potential.
So the challenge is how to use this waste fabric to produce clothing which is fashionable, interesting and consistent, just like anything else you might buy on the High Street. This is our challenge.
